After Fumigation: What to Do, and When It Is Safe to Go Back Home
The technician has left. Here is exactly what to do next: how long to stay out, what to clean, what not to touch, and what is normal to see in the days after.

Most of the anxiety around pest treatment is about what happens afterwards, not during. How long do I stay out? Is it safe for my toddler? Why am I still seeing cockroaches three days later? This guide answers all of that plainly, so you know what to expect before you book, not after.
How long before you can go back inside
This depends on the treatment, not a single rule for every job:
| Treatment | Typical re-entry time |
|---|---|
| Cockroach gel baiting | Usually no wait; the home stays usable during and after |
| Residual spray to cracks and skirting | A short wait while surfaces dry, confirmed on the day |
| Bed bug treatment | Treated rooms empty for roughly four to six hours |
| Indoor mosquito residual spraying | Out of the treated rooms for two to three hours |
| Outdoor mosquito fogging | Everyone, including pets, indoors with windows closed during fogging and for two to three hours after |
| Rodent baiting | No wait; bait is placed in stations away from living areas |
We confirm the exact time for your treatment in writing before we start, as explained on our pest control page. If anyone in the home is pregnant, very young, elderly or has a respiratory condition, tell us beforehand so we can plan around it.
What to do when you get back in
- Open windows and ventilate before using treated rooms normally, even once the stated re-entry time has passed.
- Leave bait placements alone. Cockroach and ant gel look like small blobs or dots; rodent bait sits inside sealed, tamper-resistant stations. Wiping, spraying or moving either one undoes the treatment.
- Do not mop or wash treated skirting, cracks and edges for the period we advise, usually several days. Residual treatments need to stay on the surface to keep working.
- Keep food sealed and surfaces clear as normal, so bait stays the most attractive option for the pest.
- Cover aquariums and reintroduce pet bowls and bedding once the room has ventilated and the product is dry.
What is normal in the days after treatment
- Seeing more pests than before, briefly. Bait and residual treatments drive cockroaches, ants and bed bugs out of hiding as they react to the product. This usually peaks in the first few days and then drops.
- A faint chemical smell for a short period, which should fade with ventilation. If a strong smell persists for longer than we told you to expect, tell us.
- Some bites continuing for a few nights after bed bug treatment, from bugs that were already active before the visit. Activity should fall over the following one to two weeks, not stay level.
When to contact us again
- If activity has not visibly reduced by the point we told you to expect it.
- If you see signs of the pest in a room that was not part of the original treatment.
- If anyone in the household has an unexpected reaction, such as skin or breathing irritation, after returning to a treated room.
- If you need the follow-up visit brought forward rather than waiting for the scheduled date.
For pests where a second visit is part of the job, such as bed bugs, this is already built into your quote. See our pricing guide for how that is worked out.
What not to do after treatment
- Do not spray additional over-the-counter insecticide over what we have applied. Mixing products can reduce effectiveness and is not necessary.
- Do not deep-clean treated edges, skirting or bait points before the time we advise.
- Do not assume a single pest sighting a few days later means the treatment failed. Compare it to what you saw before.
- Do not skip the follow-up visit because things look better. For bed bugs and most cockroach infestations, the review visit is what catches activity from eggs that hatched after the first treatment.
Frequently asked questions
Can I clean the house the same day as treatment?
Light tidying away from treated edges and bait points is fine once you are back in the home. Avoid mopping, wiping or vacuuming directly over bait placements and treated skirting for the period we advise.
Is it safe for children to play on the floor after treatment?
Once the stated re-entry time has passed and the room has been ventilated, yes, for most treatments. Keep children away from bait stations and any surface still visibly wet.
How soon can I have visitors or host an event after fogging?
Once the stated re-entry time has passed and the space has been ventilated, it is fine for visitors. For an event, we can plan the fogging to finish with enough time to air the space beforehand.
I still see activity a week later. Is that normal?
Some reduction should be visible within the first one to two weeks, though not necessarily zero activity. If you are not seeing a clear downward trend by then, contact us so we can bring the review forward rather than waiting.
